Jr-Sr High School News 🎗️

Spring is just around the corner and we know the rest of the year will fly by!

Recently, our Senior National Honor's Society students tapped Junior students who are eligible to apply to this prestigious organization. Students are tapped based on scholarship, leadership, service and character. Students must maintain an overall academic GPA of 90% or higher, demonstrate character with integrity, honesty and responsibility, take initiative in the school community, and participate in service opportunities. Junior students were given a gold ribbon to wear. Applications are due to Mr. Harris by March 4th. Congratulations to all students who were tapped!

In addition to the snow melting and warmer weather, we are looking forward to many upcoming events, including the opportunity to host the All-County Musical Festival, High School Musical performances, and the start of the spring sports season. Impact Day has been set for May 21st. Senior students are also making plans for their prom on June 11th.

Academically, our students are putting the work into their courses to be prepared and excel on AP exams in May and Regents exams in June. Dates are linked to help you and your student begin to plan during the busy spring season.

Student of the Month ⭐

Congratulations to January Student of the Month winner, Gunner Pitcher. Gunner is a junior student who was nominated by Mrs. Duhow.

Mrs. Duhow reports that Gunner has made a remarkable turnaround both academically and personally. Over recent months, Gunner has demonstrated increased focus, responsibility, and perseverance in his schoolwork. His academic progress reflects genuine effort and a willingness to learn from past challenges, and his growth has not gone unnoticed.  Beyond academics, Gunner has shown strong character and empathy. When he noticed that I was struggling to fix an item in my classroom after several unsuccessful attempts, he took it upon himself to bring in model glue from home to help solve the problem. This thoughtful and proactive act demonstrated kindness, problem-solving skills, and a desire to help others without being asked. Gunner’s continued academic improvement and his thoughtful actions toward others demonstrate meaningful personal growth. He is taking ownership of his choices and setting a positive example for his peers, which makes him deserving of this recognition.

If you see Gunner, be sure to congratulate him!

Mustang Mentor Award 🍎

Medina IMPACT club will be continuing to recognize one Medina Junior-Senior High School Staff member each month with the Mustang Mentor Award. Students are encouraged to nominate a staff member for this honor in their grade level Google Classrooms.

Congratulations to English teacher, Mr. Giacomini, our January nominee.
You make a difference!

From the Counseling Center 🏫

Medina will be taking a field trip to the National College Fair in Buffalo on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. In addition to the fair, we’ll also be touring D'Youville University.

Open to any Junior. If interested in attending, please stop by the Counseling Center to pick up permission slips, college research form, and additional materials. All forms due back by: March 13th 2026. No exceptions.

Annual reviews and course selection are underway! Please be on the lookout for a pass from either Mrs. Krawiec or Mrs. McGrath (covering for Mrs. Doll). Prior to meeting, encourage students to begin thinking about which electives they may want to take next year. As a reminder, course selections should align with and support a student's career goals. All course descriptions can be found in the course catalog for reference. We look forward to meeting with you all!

Next year's course catalog can be found here.

ALL students can access resources on the Counseling Center Google Classroom. Resources under the classwork tab include Choices360 to help them narrow down future career options and colleges or trade schools that match their interests. We encourage parents to spend a few minutes looking at these resources before course selection.

Update from NYS on Over-the-Counter Medications

New York State law requires both parent/guardian permission and a health care provider's order for any prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications administered during the school day or at school-sponsored activities.

The New York State Department of Health and the US Food and Drug Administration now classify the following items as over-the-counter medications that require a medical provider's order to be used at school: ( https://www.fda.gov/media/75750/download )
  • Vaseline/Calamine/Lip Balm/Lotion/Baby Wipes (plain water wipes with no active ingredients do not require a medication order).
  • Contact lens solution/eye wash/toothpaste with fluoride/ Deodorant with Antiperspirant (plain deodorant does not require a medical order).
  • Cough/ sore throat drops/Cold medicine (including homeopathic varieties)
  • Antibiotic ointment/creams/rubbing alcohol/Peroxide

Please note:
  • Students are not allowed to carry medications at school without a medical provider order & parent permission
  • All medicines (including items listed above) must be provided to the school in their original, labeled prescription or OTC packaging.
  • Medications will be stored in the nurse's office during the school day and carried by a school-designated chaperone during sports, field trips, or other school-sponsored activities.

Exceptions
  1. Sunscreen may be used without a medical provider's order, but a parent note is required during school hours. If you would like the School Nurse to apply, this requires a medical order and parent permission.
  2. Students with life-threatening medical conditions (such as Diabetes, anaphylaxis, or Asthma) may be eligible to self-carry and self-administer rescue medication.

Please contact the School Nurse or see medinacsd.org/health-offices for the required procedures and documentation.
