The Medina Teachers Association, the Medina School District, and the Medina Area Partnership are proud to announce the May selections for Students of the Month. This award is a combined effort of these organizations to recognize students who go above and beyond to help teachers and fellow students succeed and enjoy school.
Walsh Duffield has graciously sponsored the award for May. This month, students are being honored with this article and a yard sign from the MTA to celebrate their achievement. The yard sign was presented by Joseph Byrne, President of the Medina Teachers’ Association. Mrs. Mark also presented the winners with a pen and pencil set from the school district. In addition, Walsh Duffield presented each of this month’s winners with gift cards to The Author’s Note.
From Oak Orchard School, Mrs. Woodburn nominated a first-grade student, Jason Wetherbee. Mrs. Woodburn shared the following about Jason. He joined the Medina district this fall and immediately made a positive impression. He quickly formed friendships, showed kindness to everyone, and embraced his new school community with enthusiasm. I was truly impressed by how smoothly Jason acclimated to his new environment. He genuinely values his classmates and often shares how much he enjoys being part of our classroom family. Jason treats everyone with care and respect, and he consistently finds thoughtful ways to encourage others to make good choices. He is also extremely helpful to his teachers and peers. This year, we have welcomed three new students into our class, and Jason has been the first to greet and include each of them, helping them feel comfortable and welcome. He is a natural role model, focused, respectful, and always putting forth his best effort on every assignment. His participation in class discussions is thoughtful, and he often makes meaningful connections between what we are learning and his experiences outside of school. For example, during our science unit on animal habitats, Jason was so inspired by our lesson on bird nests that he went home, discussed it with his family, searched for nests in his yard, and brought a few in to share with the class. His curiosity and enthusiasm for learning are truly contagious. Jason’s positive attitude brightens our classroom. He starts each day with a smile, approaches every project with excitement, and shows determination in the face of challenges. He is a role model for his classmates and stands out as a leader!
From Wise Intermediate School, Ms. Gates nominated a fifth-grade student, Ay’Marie Rutland. When Mrs. Gates indicated her reasons for nominating Ay’Marie, she shared that she is so impressed by Ay’Marie’s progress this school year and her willingness to help anyone in the classroom. Ay’Marie consistently shows kindness by lending out her Chromebook charger to students who need them, giving away her extra pencils to those that have lost theirs, and sharing her supplies with others around her when they don’t have enough. Ay’Marie is always looking for ways to support others. Her actions come from a place of genuine care and thoughtfulness. Ay’Marie always makes thoughtful, responsible decisions and leads by example. Her ability to stay calm under pressure, think things through, and make smart choices is inspiring to her fellow classmates. One moment that stood out was when Ay’Marie noticed a classmate struggling to find their Chromebook charger, and she immediately offered hers. It is these small, kind actions that reflect a deep sense of compassion. Ay’Marie also consistently makes wise choices. During class discussions, she offers thoughtful answers and asks meaningful questions that show her curiosity and interest in the subject we are discussing. Ay’Marie understands when it is time to focus, when to step up as a leader, and when to listen with patience and understanding. Whether it is resolving a conflict peacefully, staying on task without being reminded, or setting a positive example for her peers, Ay’Marie always leads with her heart. She is truly a role model in both behavior and attitude.
From the Jr-Sr High School, Sophia Goyette, a Senior, was nominated by Mr. Harris, Mrs. Cinquino, and Mrs. Rosenbeck. They report the following about Sophia. Sophia is a senior and an incredible student who is very involved in school activities. Sophia is the current Social Chair of the National Honor Society and President of the Student Association, and she has been an incredible leader who takes all her assigned tasks seriously. For the NHS, she was in charge of designing and creating a program for the NHS Veterans Day Dinner, as well as the Slideshow that is played at the NHS Induction Ceremony. She went above and beyond, using Canva and making both projects completely from scratch in a very high quality. They looked incredible, and so well done. She is extremely responsible, to the point where if she does not do something she was tasked with, someone else made a mistake, not her. Recently for the NHS, she did not show up for a rehearsal. The fact that I knew immediately that I made a mistake, (which I did as I forgot she was away on a trip for the previous meeting and was not given notice), has to show for her immense responsibility as a student and leader. Next year’s Social Chair will have huge shoes to fill. Sophia has been president of her class since she was in 8th grade. She has always stepped up to make posters/signs, come up with very creative ideas that have been implemented school and district wide, and has been a strong voice in the Student Association since as long as she has been a part of the club. We never had to worry about anything getting done when Sophia was on the job or at the helm leading this school. We truly do not know what we will do without her when she graduates this year, because there is no one we trust more than Sophia Goyette.
Congratulations to this month’s winners! The MTA, MCSD, and the MAP will continue the Student of the Month program next school year. Be on the lookout for honorees next year. Look for posters in the windows of Medina businesses identifying them as proud supporters of this program. Who will be the next outstanding Medina student to be honored???
