• The John Ryan School of Historical Excellence is an honor society at Medina High School established by the Medina High School History faculty with the generous support of the Medina Sandstone Society.

    For students to qualify, they must meet the following criteria:

    • An overall average in all history courses of 90 or above
    • Achieve mastery level of 85 or above on both history Regents exams
    • Successful completion of two AP History courses  
    • Completion of a local history project

    Those who qualify will be honored in the following ways:

    • Designation as a John Ryan Scholar on the diploma
    • Name added to the John Ryan School of Historical Excellence Wall
    • Eligible to compete to be the John Ryan Scholar of the Year and be awarded a scholarship

    (Archived) The criteria for the 2018 scholarship competition:

    • Using the historical Medina motto, "Roots in the past, eyes on the future," explain how Medina's history will help to shape its future.
    • Essays must be 1000-1500 words
    • Essays must be typed using MLA formatting
    • You must use at least four sources
    • Essays are due electronically no later than 3 PM on April 26, 2018, to tbensley@medinacsd.org
