Professional Development
Medina Central School District values the continuing growth of our teachers and staff. We strive to provide differentiated professional development options that are research based, aligned with district goals and targeted to the individual needs of our teachers and staff that will ultimately serve to support students.
Professional development planning is done by committee following New York State guidelines. Input to the process coupled with data that is acquired through needs assessments and feedback forms are used to plan appropriate professional development programs. Professional development offerings are varied, dynamic, and responsive to needs. Professional development embodies our mission of "Educate to inspire all".
Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers
New teachers to the district are required to participate in orientation and training prior to the commencement of their employment. They are provided with a mentor for their first year in the district who serves as a support to their professional growth.
Department Chairs in English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Special Education serve as teacher leaders for their respsective stakeholder groups. They provide information on professional development opportunities, align resources to instruction, and facilitate dialogue on topics of curriculum, instruction, and assessment on a regular basis.
Grade level teams in Kindergarten through grade 6 have opportunities for collaborative professional development via grade level meeting times that occur periodially throughout the year. This year our focus has been on unpacking the Social Studies and Science standards in preparation for their implementation in the upcoming school year.
Coaches and BOCES support staff provide job-embedded professional development on a variety of needs throughout the year, including but not limited to differentiated instruction, literacy, and technology.
Conference Days are held annually, and teachers and staff have the opporutnity to self-select from a menu of opportunities that are aligned to the mission and goals of the district and individual buildings.
