A Message from the Director of Special Programs
If you have a student that receives school-aged special education services, you may be invited to attend your child's annual review meeting earlier than you may be used to. Medina Central School District will be implementing anniversary date annual reviews. With an anniversary date, your child will still have a comprehensive annual review at least once every twelve months. The difference is that meetings occur throughout the school year, not only during the Spring. Another difference is that IEPs now span 12 full months. They will likely be effective a month or so after the annual review concludes and the end date will be twelve months after that. Essentially, instead of determining a student programming for the following school year in March, and delaying implementation until September, the recommended changes will be able to be implemented at the recommendation of the committee. If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to give us a call or ask any clarifying questions during your meeting.
The department's focus remains particularly on the foundational principals of Special Education including Specially Designed Instruction, evidence-based instruction and accommodations, and high quality inclusive programming. The NYS "Blueprint for Improved Results for Students with Disabilities" also serves as anchor for our everyday practices.
I look forward to working with all stakeholders to create the best experience possible for the students of Medina, and strive to garner the greatest outcomes from every individual student. Please feel free to reach out to my Office, or me personally, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's educational needs. And please check back periodically for updates!
